The route
Leaving Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), the drive to Ella heads inland through Kurunegala and up into the hill country, with the scenery shifting from lowland coconut country to tea estates and mountain ridges as you climb. It's one of the most scenic drives in Sri Lanka — worth doing in daylight if your flight timing allows it.
How long it takes
Plan for around 6 hours behind the wheel, plus a stop or two along the way. It's a long first (or last) leg of a Sri Lanka trip, so build in a buffer either side rather than scheduling anything for the same afternoon.
