Best Time to Visit Sigiriya: A Practical Guide

Best Time to Visit Sigiriya: A Practical Guide

When to climb Sigiriya rock fortress to avoid the heat and crowds, and how to time your airport transfer around it.

Best time of day

Sigiriya opens early, and arriving right at opening (or in the last couple of hours before closing) means far less heat and far fewer crowds on the final staircase than a midday visit.

Best time of year

The dry season, roughly December to April, gives the clearest views from the top and the easiest underfoot conditions. The wetter months bring more dramatic skies and noticeably thinner crowds, if you don't mind the chance of a shower.

Getting there from the airport

From Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), it's about 4 hours to Sigiriya. If you land in the morning, an early-afternoon arrival still leaves time to check in and plan an early climb the next day.

Practical tips

Bring water and sun protection, wear shoes with grip for the metal staircases, and allow two to three hours on site for the climb and the grounds around the rock.
